Psychotherapy and Nursing

I have worked 44 years as a nurse and the past ten years as an addiction counsellor.  Since 2015 I have been registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Before the College opened, I was certified with the Canadian Counselling & Psychotherapy Association.

I have worked as an EAP counsellor and have worked with individuals, children, couples and families. I teach classes for anger mgt, alcohol education and domestic violence. Many court mandated individuals have taken my classes and have discovered new ways of living their lives. As a child I saw my father being brought home by two men because he was drunk, and this scared me. Substance abuse is my specialization because I have seen first-hand what  alcohol does to a person, their relationships and families.

My addiction counselling placement was completed at the Good Shepherd in Toronto. I helped men to be prepared to enter a treatment facility for their addiction.  My nursing placement was on the Schizophrenia floor at the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health in Toronto. Many have a dual diagnosis meaning they have an addiction and a mental illness. At CAMH I took their classes on withdrawal and nutrition to further help those abusing substances.

My approach is wholistic in nature because we are a whole person and everyone is unique and so is their treatment plan. I care about our environment and our inner environment in order to live a fulfilled meaningful life. As a nurse and psychotherapist, I am very interested in our body from head to toe. I provide Advance footcare for diabetics who also need psychotherapy to accept their condition as it changes. The nerve connection from head to toe affects our health and personality and that inspired me to take Solestry – the art of foot reading training.

My therapy models are CBT – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, CBT & Art, play therapy, forgiveness, grief work, conflict & resolution, pre-marital and Christian counselling. At times clients want an assessment of their relationship and I introduce them to Enrich Canada, an online service that evaluates the strength of their relationship. As their facilitator I review the results with you in our counselling sessions.  I look forward to serving the Wallaceburg community.
